Welcome to the October 2015 Edition of the PE Playbook. The PE Playbook is a review of blog posts over the past month that are specific to Physical Education or Youth Sport. Its about bringing these blog posts into a format that is easy to find, use and share. Hopefully this will result in more PE Teachers (and others) reading them and engaging with them. If you have any feedback about the presentation or content of the PE Playbook then please let me know in the comments section of this post or via @ImSporticus. Previous Editions of the PE Playbook can be found here.
Rob Shaw is a 2nd Year Primary Ed student with a specialism in PE. He is new to the PE blogging scene and blogs at physical-literacy.blogspot.co.uk specifically about Physical Literacy and PE. His work with the International Physical Literacy Association gives him a valuable insight and I look forward to reading his future blog posts, especially on fusing the philosophy of PL with practice in schools. The inclusion of physical education as a foundation subject gives a brief historical view of the UK PE Curriculum and sets the scene for his later posts. In Moving forward in physical education with a physical literacy framework Rob tried to clarify some of the misunderstanding of terms frequently used as synonyms with Physical Literacy like FMS. The relationship between FMS and Physical Literacy are explored further inUpholding the integrity of physical literacy. Rob’s most recent post The sole purpose for physical education as a subject in school, critiques Arnold’s definition of the education in Physical Education and suggests that education ‘in movement’ is the one that makes PE uniques, but is often the most overlooked. You should also check out his earlier blog posts.
Work Hard, Work Smart! by @coachplusblog looks at persistence and failure through the lens of MMA.
A Guide for Practice: Developing an Action Framework and Objections to the use of Fundamental Movement Skills as central to Physical Literacy by @lenalmond writing for the IPLA. In the first posts Len suggests a practical framework for teaching PL for early years. I look forward to him developing his thoughts in the future. In the second post Len along with José Afonso clearly state their objections to FMS being considered at the heart of Physical Literacy.
It’s Broken, Let’s Fix It by Amanda Stanec is a rallying call and asks us the question why society is still willing to ignore the science around physical activity and all the benefits it brings.
Richard, Mark, Darrell, Sheila, and Arvo and leading and following by Keith Lyons, who is fast becoming one of my favourite bloggers, explores firstly the idea of ‘working out loud’ through social media and secondly his thoughts on alternative leadership, both through his unique way of viewing interconnected ideas.
Handwriting…A Unique Movement Signature by @move2thrive is a proponent of Physical Literacy. This post explores further the analogy of literacy and movement and asks the question ‘when is it okay for our movement to be different and not perfect, but recognisable by others?’
Hey parents! Your ‘support’ could be destroying your child’s chances (in sport and life!) by Stuart Armstrong who shares a story about a friend who specialised early in Tennis. Stuart feels that this might have had an impact on his self-destruction, but it was more likely his parents. That experience has led Stuart to set up a programme where he wants to educate parents so they can better support their children in sport.
We take responsibility for “WHAT” but the concept of “HOW” the players must themselves fill with life by Mark O’Sullivan is a wonderful piece. Often we read about practitioners philosophy or their approach. Mark puts both side by side in his approach to football, which is powerful in gaining understanding to what he is trying to achieve as a coach for his players.
The Gamification of PE by Lee Andersen is a brilliant post, and easily my favourite of the month. Lee looks at the elements of computer games which children enjoy and clearly shows how you can use them through a constraints based teaching approach within PE and Sport.
Eddie Jones – Building Sustainable Performance Excellence – Part One and Eddie Jones – Building Sustainable Performance Excellence – Part Two by Vern Gabetta shares some insights into Eddie Jones coaching philosophy and approach.
Do your athletes trust you? by Dr Craig Harrison suggests in the post that trust is important to building effect relationships with your athletes. He highlights four key areas he thinks are important for fostering that trust, underpinned by honesty throughout.
