On the first day in my previous school I sat down next to a colleague and began to introduce myself as the new Teacher of PE. She kindly smiled at me, pointed to the opposite side of the common room, and said sweetly ‘I know. The shallow side is over there.’ I’ve been drowning ever since.
After 17 years of teaching PE in primary and secondary schools, I’m now in HE, trying to help other teachers to make PE, Youth Sport and Physical Activity meaningful for young people.

This is the stereotypical image of PE teachers and not untypical of the academic snobbery that does exist in certain schools, alas. As an ‘academic’ teacher with a long association with the PE and Games Dept. at my school, I have worked with thoroughly professional, intelligent and extremely dedicated colleagues. Such superciliousness should be treated with the contempt it deserves.
